“See and Be Scene” at Sarasota Film Festival

sff cover

The Sarasota Film Festival (SFF) is recognized as a world-class platform for thought-provoking films from some of the best-known and emerging independent voices. Although the Sarasota Film Festival is one of nearly 850 film festivals in North America, they continually rank in the top ten percent.

In February, the Sarasota Film Festival unveiled their new campaign artwork created by Tyler Mathis, a Motion Design student at Ringling College of Art and Design. The annual celebration of film returns to Downtown Sarasota March 31st – April 9th, and the theme is a multidimensional play on words: See & Be Seen, Sea & Be Seen, and See & Be Scene. “For that reason, we are excited to share an artwork triptych, each of which captures the different iterations. Which one is your Festival?”

This year’s Festival will welcome some celebrity star power, as well. Oscar-nominated actor Stanley Tucci, Golden Globe-nominated actress Rosanna Arquette, actress Diane Lane, documentarian Rory Kennedy and actress-filmmaker Aisha Tyler are set to attend this year’s festival.

Meet Our Members: Kerkering, Barberio & Co.

Future Focused

Since the early 1970s, Kerkering Barberio & Co., CPAs has served the Sarasota community and beyond with the highest quality accounting and business consulting services. From the firm’s earliest days, founding members Dick Kerkering and Allan Barberio knew the importance of serving clients differently, and through their leadership and the guidance of firm leaders following in their footsteps, Kerkering Barberio has grown to be one of the largest locally owned CPA firms in Southwest Florida.

Beyond guiding clients in the development of their business succession plans, KB Managing Shareholder, Rob Lane, also helps to guide Kerkering Barberio’s next generation of firm leadership. Following extensive “Firm of the Future” studies in 2015, Lane hosts monthly Managing Shareholder luncheons for KB’s up and coming leaders to have an opportunity to weigh-in on the firm’s growth and influence future direction of the Sarasota accounting firm.

Three leaders embracing Kerkering Barberio’s future focus are Patricia Entsminger, Brian Leidel and Heather Williams. Entsminger, a ten-year shareholder, stepped outside of her traditional audit role in 2016 to create a new position, providing an all-inclusive experience for clients looking for guidance in tax, audit, internal controls and CFO outsourcing.

Admitted as shareholders in 2016, Heather Williams and Brian Leidel are also making an impact in their community and respective areas of expertise. Heather, a recipient of the Chamber’s Young Professional of the Year Award for 2016, offers expertise in individual and business tax consulting with a focus on estate and trust planning, while Brian specializes in individual and business tax consulting with a special concentration in developing new client relationships in the firm’s expanded Tampa office. Heather, Brian, and Patricia are very active in the community and are embracing the opportunity to become Kerkering Barberio’s next generation of leaders.

CEO Spotlight: Rob Lane of Kerkering, Barberio & Co.

Better Together – The Power of Collaboration in the Community

rob-lane-headshot-2-7-26-16
Robert J. Lane, CPA | Managing Shareholder of Kerkering, Barberio & Co.

As managing shareholder of Kerkering, Barberio & Co., one of the largest independent CPA firms in Southwest Florida, it’s easy to understand how Rob Lane might have a lot on his plate, but this doesn’t keep him from being actively involved in several different community organizations as a board member and volunteer. Kerkering Barberio has a long history of volunteerism in the Sarasota community, and it’s through the example and leadership of Rob and those who came before him that the organization holds over a 50% volunteer rate among employees, who are involved in everything from participating in community events to serving on boards.

Rob learned early in his career the value of giving back, thanks to two early mentors at Kerkering Barberio, Dieter Gebhard, and Charles Baumann. Gebhard was very active with The Chamber, and quickly encouraged Rob to become involved. Rob discovered his passion for connecting economic development and social initiatives, recognizing that the two go hand in hand in making a community great. Through his involvement with the Economic Development Corporation Sarasota County and United Way Suncoast, Rob found outlets to share his expertise and make a difference in fostering a strong economic base in the community that, in turn, provided opportunities for employment and advancement.

kb-trio-logo

“I think the biggest takeaway for me in all of my years of community involvement has been the power of collaboration to reach a common goal,” Lane said. “Bringing together government, non-profits, business and even media to address a single issue, it’s amazing how effective that cohesive unit can be. You don’t have to do this on your own; that’s been a valuable insight for me.”

Heeding those words, Rob has maximized KB’s impact in the community by becoming a connector in his own organization, mentoring the next generation of KB leaders in getting involved. While not mandatory, community involvement is a big part of the Kerkering Barberio culture, beginning in the interview process, where prospective employees are made aware of different opportunities to give their time and talents. Employees are offered paid time off to be involved in organizations that are meaningful to them, which Lane says is key to being successful as a volunteer, to find something they personally enjoy doing.
kb-group-photo-at-habitat-for-humanity-home-build

One recent group volunteer effort was the construction of a house from the ground up as part of a Habitat for Humanity initiative. More than ten employees shoveled, hammered and worked the day away to create a home for a young family in need. KB team members have also raised Southeastern Guide Dog puppies, cleaned shorelines for Sarasota Bay Watch and almost everything in between that inspires their passion to serve.

“Volunteers are such an important part of the success of this community,” Rob concluded. “And while my involvement has helped fulfill a need in the community, personally, I’ve had the opportunity to work side-by-side with a diverse group of professionals to see their viewpoints and how they handle different situations. It’s made me a stronger leader.”
